History

Findochty Water Sports Club, formed in 1983, is based at the pretty, well sheltered harbour of Findochty, locally pronounced "Finechty". Findochty is on the Moray Firth, in North East Scotland, about three miles East of the large fishing port of Buckie.

The club caters mainly for sailing boats, but all types of boats are welcomed. Members boats include motor cruisers, angling boats and commercial fishing boats.

Yachtsmen on passage are welcomed and the village offers most essential amenities, with the rest being a short taxi or bus ride away, in Buckie.

Findochty is a drying harbour, therefore members boats with deep draught and single keel must lean against the wall at low water. Shoal draft or bilge keel boats can be accommodated at pontoon berths. There is space alongside the North Quay for visiting boats.

Permission to berth a boat in the harbour should be sought from the harbourmaster,Mr John Cowie,on 01542-832700 during the week and 01542 832340 at weekends. At present there is a waiting list for permanent berths.

The Present club house is "The Howff" a small building at the landward end of the north quay. The club has recently taken over the lease of the Harbour Office, which makes up the other end of the building. Plans are at an early stage for combining the Howff and Harbour Office into one unit, to include a shower/toilet area plus kitchen.

Facilities available to members include power point and extension leads, hose pipes and a workshop/storage shed, for boat's gear.

The club holds a succession of races and cruises throughout the summer months. The prime motivation being social as well as competitive and nautical.

More serious racers are well catered for by other local, Moray Firth, sailing clubs. There is an annual trophy for the most successful club competitor in these "open" races.

There is an annual hand book, which lists fixtures and racing rules, as well as the constitution and we also have regular newsletters which let everyone know what has been happening and is about to happen.

(For extracts from the newsletter see "What we do", left)

We are always looking for new members and welcome all levels of experience.

If you have never tried sailing we can usually find you a place for a trial trip, on a members boat.

If you have an urge to sail but cannot justify the outlay for your own boat, or you would like to build up experience first, keen regular crew are a welcome commodity.

Our club has always had an open mind about water users, and we welcome all water sports to join us. So if your interest is sail boarding, angling, dinghy sailing or diving, give us a call.

Contact details can be found at "join us".
